A newspaper reporter witnesses what appears to be a brutal murder in the apartment across the courtyard from her own, but when the police arrive, every trace of the crime has disappeared. Determined to prove what she saw, she launches her own investigation, uncovering a disturbing connection between a young model, her ex-husband, and a long-buried medical secret. Beginning as a murder mystery before spiralling into psychological horror, the story draws on voyeurism, paranoia, and fractured identity to continually undermine certainty. Its inventive visual style and escalating sense of unease transform a seemingly straightforward investigation into one of the defining American thrillers of the 1970s.
