Rendered homeless and relatively poor by the patrilineal laws that dictated their father’s will, Elinor and Marianne Dashwood (Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet) are not exactly the most marriageable young women in a world where desirability is usually conferred by property and birth. The practical Elinor and passionate Marianne wind up living with their mother and younger sister Margaret in a simple country cottage, forced to obtain financial security through marriages of their own. Emma Thomson plays double duty as star and screenwriter, earning Academy Award nominations for Best Actress and Best Writing (Adapted Screenplay) and winning the latter, becoming the first and only person to win Oscars for both acting and writing. Kate Winslet also picked up a nomination for Best Supporting Actress, among the seven in total for the film.
