Håkan Hardenberger directs and performs Hummel’s Trumpet Concerto, a showpiece by Beethoven’s contemporary. The programme moves to Brett Dean, whose Adagio molto e mesto and Testament offer thoughtful reflections on Beethoven’s struggles and achievements, viewed through a modern lens. The evening ends with excerpts from The Creatures of Prometheus interspersed with HK Gruber’s Three Mob Pieces and Manhattan Broadcasts, creating a lively dialogue between tradition and contemporary invention.
