Come together with architects, community organisers and artists to resist the isolation epidemic and reimagine the house as a home and true site of belonging. A panel including built-environment professional Nabil Al-Kinani, architecture critic Phineas Harper, community-led regeneration consultant Tim Oshodi and journalist Vicky Spratt discuss how, while we crave connection, modern architecture often isolates us. High-rise, densely populated buildings distance us from the natural world, and urban displacement driven by rapid gentrification erodes the shared spaces and experiences that once brought together and sustained our communities. This engaging talk takes up the urgent question of how to reclaim these connections to each other and to the Earth, and why home design is seemingly shifting in the opposite direction. But what alternative models of living are out there? The panel look to the past to learn from traditions of radical living, community-based living and the history of property ownership. The talk maps a rich and layered landscape of themes and ideas including architecture, the gendered domestic split, the decline of nuclear familial living and the rise of shared and community-based homes and queer-rooted spaces.
