This screening will have an introduction from Liberating Cinema founder & director Dr Mina Radović. Liberating Cinema UK is an Edinburgh-based non-profit charitable organisation committed to the representation, restoration, and exhibition of world cinema heritage. We run an annual programme of Masterclasses, Workshops, Exhibitions, Curated Retrospectives, a regular Film Series, premiere Restoration Lab connecting archives, heritage and education, and are the home of Serbian Film Festival UK, the first festival of its kind in Britain and flagship event building cultural bridges. Celebrating the 10th anniversary of The Liberating Cinema Film Series, the year-round exhibition programme was born in St Andrews and has since grown to a Scottish/UK-wide and international phenomenon, spotlighting world cinema, restored classics and contemporary gems. The programme is curated by Liberating Cinema founder & director Dr Mina Radović who will be here in-person to introduce the films. Hadži-Aleksandar Đurović, Serbia/Jordan, 2022, 122 mins, Serbian and Arabic w/ English subtitles) Set in the 10th century, young Paraskeva leaves her life in the city of Constantinople and retreats into the Jordan desert, where she spends the next 40 years in ascetic struggle. Steeped in the legacy of Byzantium and finely exploring the relations between Christians and Muslims, Hadži-Aleksandar Đurović’s A Cross in the Desert is an inspired rethinking of art and faith and fantastic continuation of a tradition started by Bergman and Tarkovsky.
