After hosting the UK premiere at the British Film Institute last month, Women & Cocaine are back with another screening of Letty Lynton (1932), Joan Crawford’s most elusive film. A defining melodrama of the pre-Code era, Letty Lynton languished in legal limbo for 90 years after a plagiarism lawsuit removed it from circulation, but now it returns from cinematic exile in a stunning restoration courtesy of Warner Bros and with support from Crawford’s grandson Casey Lalonde. Crawford stars as a Manhattan socialite driven to desperate measures by a possessive former lover. Clarence Brown directs with razor-sharp tension, while Adrian’s costumes, especially the ‘Letty Lynton dress’, sparked a nationwide fashion craze hailed by Edith Head as cinema’s greatest influence on fashion. The film will be preceded by a short introduction and followed by a raffle. Seating is unallocated. Service dogs welcome.
