A man accidentally kills his mistress and returns to his ordinary life, waiting, with mounting dread, to be found out. But nobody seems to be looking. Chabrol’s most pitiless examination of bourgeois self-preservation is a film in which the real horror is not guilt but the ease with which it can be absorbed. Juste avant la nuit adapts Edward Atiyah's 1951 novel The Thin Line , also adapted by Japanese melodrama master Mikio Naruse ( Floating Clouds ) in his 1966 film The Stranger Within a Woman . Stéphane Audran's performance as Hélène Masson earned her a double BAFTA for Best Actress in a Leading Role, alongside her leading role in Luis Buñuel's satire The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie .
