She published her first novel, Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit, in 1985. Throughout her distinguished career, she has explored identity, gender and physicality across numerous books and screenplays. She is Professor of New Writing at the University of Manchester. Her recent publications include 12 Bytes: How We Got Here.
