In 1930s Tokyo, former geisha Sada Abe begins an affair with Kichizo, the married proprietor of the inn where she works. Withdrawing from the world into rented rooms, the pair surrender themselves to an increasingly intense cycle of sex, jealousy and experimentation. Their mutual obsession gradually consumes every other part of their lives, carrying them towards an infamous and violent conclusion. Based on the true story of Sada Abe, Nagisa Oshima’s IN THE REALM OF THE SENSES became an international sensation through its unprecedented combination of arthouse filmmaking and unsimulated sex. Produced as a French-Japanese collaboration to escape Japan’s censorship laws, the film was seized, banned and cut in numerous countries, while Oshima faced an obscenity trial at home. Fifty years later, it remains one of cinema’s most beautiful, confrontational and genuinely erotic studies of desire taken to its absolute limit.
