Gwen John was not only a painter, but also a prolific writer and correspondent. Her archive contains thousands of letters to artists and friends, notebooks full of rules on art, and diaries filled with colour motifs and prayers. It is one of the most extensive archives of any 20th century woman artist. This talk Helena Anderson will explore John's writing and how it influenced her art. Images of letters and of women writing and reading appear frequently in John's work, she used writing to think through the problems of painting, and her writing and drawing even resemble each other at times. In order to really understand John as an artist, we have to also consider her writing. Helena Anderson is an AHRC-funded Collaborative Doctoral Partnership student with Amgueddfa Cymru-Museum Wales and the University of Bristol.
