A group of young United States Marines on leave in San Francisco before shipping out for Vietnam take part in a cruel contest known as a "dogfight," in which each man competes to bring the least attractive date to a party. When Eddie Birdlace invites an awkward but kind-hearted waitress and aspiring folk singer named Rose, what begins as a humiliating prank gradually develops into an unexpected connection that forces him to confront his own behaviour. As their night together unfolds, the story moves beyond its provocative premise into a compassionate portrait of two young people on the cusp of adulthood. Balancing romance with the looming shadow of Vietnam, it explores masculinity, vulnerability, and the possibility of personal change with uncommon warmth and emotional honesty. Not the same tradition as the lineage above — a genuinely different thread to pull, if you want one.
