Soon into his stay, the sleuth finds out that the influence of the novelist reaches beyond what you could call inspirational... Informally desigmated as the final entry in horror supremo John Carpenter's "Apocalypse Trilogy" following The Thing and Prince of Darkness , In the Mouth of Madness stars luminaries such as Julie Carmen, Jürgen Prochnow, David Warner and Charlton Heston alongside Neill. The film is a multi-layered tribute to the work of real-life horror novelist H.P. Lovecraft, with the titles of in-film novelist Sutter Cane's books - and indeed, the title of the film itself - being closely related to ones penned by Lovecraft.
