When it was released in 1995, this freewheeling update of Jane Austen’s Emma pretty much became an instant classic and a home video staple. Still, if you haven’t seen the escapades of Alicia Silverstone’s Cher Horowitz in a cinema, then you really haven’t seen Clueless . You need a screen the size of Filmhouse’s to properly savour its artistry, from Bill Pope’s candy-coloured cinematography to Mona May’s outrageous costume designs. And there’s no better place to appreciate Heckerling’s dizzyingly entertaining script than with a room full of people. The gags are so dense and so casually delivered that even if your Clueless rewatches are into double figures, you’ll still find more to enjoy in this endlessly rewatchable masterpiece.
