(Tenshi no Tamago) Dir Mamoru Oshii/JP 1985/72 mins/Japanese wEng ST Jinpachi Nezu, Mako Hyōdō In an underwater city, a young girl takes care of a large egg she holds delicately in her arms. While exploring the city, she encounters a boy with a gun, who is searching for a bird he has seen in his dreams. The pair form an unusual alliance, but their bond is unclear and their motives mysterious to one another. And the city and its surrounding wastelands are an unforgiving place. Forty years after a lowkey release in Japan, with its cult reputation growing throughout the intervening decades, Angel’s Egg is released in UK cinemas for the very first time, screening from an all-new 4K restoration. Angel’s Egg is a creative collaboration between acclaimed writer and director Mamoru Oshii (Ghost in the Shell) and revered artist Yoshitaka Amano (Final Fantasy, Vampire Hunter D). The film beautifully intertwines Oshii’s reflections on philosophy and theology with Amano’s distinctive ink painting style, culminating in a haunting, opaque and arrestingly beautiful hand-drawn allegorical fantasy.
