The screening on Friday 31st July, 8.35pm will have an introduction from Dr Pasquale Iannone, Lecturer in Film Studies at the University of Edinburgh. Mae Doyle comes back to her hometown a cynical woman. Her brother Joe fears that his love, fish cannery worker Peggy, may wind up like Mae. Mae marries Jerry and has a baby; she is happy but restless, drawn to Jerry's friend Earl. Another film Marilyn Monroe starred in just before her breakout year in 1953, Clash by Night is Fritz Lang's adaptation of Clifford Odets' play and stars Academy Award-nominated Barbara Stanwyck ( Stella Dallas ) as Mae. Stanwyck and her co-stars were so taken with Monroe's work on the film that they fought for her to be given star billing, leading to Clash by Night being the first film to feature Monroe's name before the title. The production was beset by a number of drawbacks including script changes, hounding from journalists following Monroe's nude calendar "scandal", and the naming of Odets by Elia Kazan in front of the House Un-American Activities Committee - thankfully, the film still made it to release and remains a vital touchstone in Monroe's career.
