And of all the psychos, sociopaths, and screw-ups that Robert De Niro has played for the director, none is more iconic than Vietnam vet Travis Bickle, the cabbie on a self-appointed, obsessive mission to wash the scum off the streets of New York City, waylaid by an attempted romance with Cybill Shepherd's re-election campaigner Betsy, and chance encounters with Jodie Foster's Iris, a 12-year-old prostitute.
