Playtime: New Adventures in Music is a multi-platform jazz institution which has had an influential presence over the last 12 years through regular Edinburgh gigs. It features a stunning shifting cast of creative guests from right across the Scottish music scene, as well as livestreams during lockdown and podcasts on the creative life of jazz. Every fortnight since 2014 The Outhouse pub has hosted the regular Playtime gigs. We and our dog, Colin, head along as often as we are able to enjoy some extremely fresh jazz compositions (sometimes written on the same day as the gig), tributes to jazz legends, or the work of special guest musicians. Now hosted by the Playtime Trio ie three founding members – guitarist Graeme Stephen, bassist Mario Caribé and drummer Tom Bancroft – these evenings draw a keen core following drawn in by their love of this eclectic but always first rate music and the welcoming atmosphere. For this very special gig we’re bringing the Playtime Trio into the Traverse Theatre with a very welcome guest, saxophonist Matthew Kilner. We can expect some newly composed music, their usual mixture of groove, banging melodies, brilliant improvisation and craic.
