Join us for two lunchtime talks.Clean Clothes and Fossil FuelsFossil fuels radically changed Americans' laundry habits between the 1920s and the 1970s. Automatic washing machines, tumble dryers, and synthetic detergents made from petroleum enabled a single worker to produce clean, dry clothes within a few hours. Yet electric appliances required oil rigs and coal mines, and the new detergents produced foaming rivers and toxic algae blooms. Julia Guarneri discusses the environmental trade-offs involved in labour-saving laundry technologies and explores how manufacturers and utility companies pushed Americans towards ever-higher resource use.Curating Toni Morrison's Random House ListIn the late 1960s and 1970s, Toni Morrison was a senior trade editor at Random House. During her time there she commissioned around fifty titles, many of which were landmark publications in their day such as fiction and memoir by African American women, the autobiographies of Angela Davis, Muhmmad Ali and Huey P. Newton, archival scrapbooks of African American history, literary anthologies of Black writing and more. Tessa Roynon describes her forthcoming project at the Library to curate a unique collection of these highly significant and beautiful books.

The Spooky Men’s Chorale is a magnificent, many-headed beast which has single- handedly turned the world of men’s singing upside down. Bypassing well trodden avenues, they carve out new territories of mighty man sounds, exquisite tenderness, and charming stupidity to both celebrate masculinity and mock it. The Spooky Men’s Chorale is 25 this year, and this tour they will celebrate their birthday with some delightful crumpets from their shimmering, ludicrous history, as well as the usual smorgasbord of tantalising new bon bons. To see them is to forever not unsee them, they are just a bunch of blokes, but where they take you will blow your mind…. In the UK/Europe they have appeared at major festivals including Tonder (Denmark), Cambridge, Broadstairs, Wickham, Camp Bestival, Towersey, Shrewsbury, and Edinburgh Fringe. Theatrical venues have, St David’s Hall (Cardiff), The Philharmonic (Liverpool), Colston Hall (Bristol), the Sheldonian (Oxford) and Sage Gateshead They are drooling with delight to be returning to The Union Chapel for their special anniversary year. All seats are unreserved and are taken on a first come first serve basis. Please arrive early before event door times if you have preferred seats. Due to the nature of our venue, please be prepared to queue for entry. The venue is fully accessible, with use of ramps and the upstairs bar is accessible with use of a platform lift. Please email [email protected] with your accessibility requirements as soon as you purchase your ticket as requests are dealt with on a first come, first serve basis. The bar is located on the first floor of the venue and will be open from the stated door time and remain open after the show. Alcohol consumption will be limited to the bar area only, it is not permitted to take alcohol to the main chapel space. An array of soft drinks and snacks will also be available and are permitted in the main space - please note the Union Chapel bar and kiosk accept card payment only. Strictly no food or drink may be brought from outside into the venue. Water bottles must be emptied before entering the venue, with refilling stations available inside.

Join us for two lunchtime talks.Reimagining Indigenous Female PowerCarmen Ávila reflects on the creative and research process behind her historical novel The Fall of the Rain Kingdoms, inspired by the life of the Indigenous Mexican ruler Lady Six Monkey which took place during the 11th century and was depicted on pre-Hispanic codices. Through this work, Ávila examines the intersections of memory, female power, and literary imagination and combines historical reconstruction with speculative and feminist storytelling to recover the voices of Indigenous women erased from dominant history.From Battlefield to ClassroomDinos Pappas explores how education became a central tool of U.S. federal policy toward Native Americans, from 19th-century assimilation campaigns to later movements for self-determination. Drawing on our holdings, he considers government reports, Indian school materials, reform literature and Native student writing and explores how schooling was used to reshape Native identity and how Native communities challenged, adapted and reclaimed education as a space of cultural survival and sovereignty.
